The direct proximity to existing science institutions such as Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF), the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technichal Systems, the Experimental Factory, the IFF's Virtual Development and Training Centre (VDTC) the Denkfabrik combined with the area’s historical atmosphere and its advanced infrastructure create ideal conditions for research and commercial activities.

The wide range of applied research and consulting available spans the Institute for Automation and Communication (ifak), research into RFID technology, the development of software solutions and the Zephram 'ideas factory'. However, as well as providing a home for well-established firms (e.g. in the new Elbe-Office), the district is intended to provide a springboard for young start-ups. One key aim of the project is to encourage communication among the firms based in the area to generate synergy.
